Appendix D - Field Rules, Field Plan and Flying
Rules
The Rideau Valley Modeler’s (RVM) field is rented and maintained for use only by RVM members in good standing. The insurance arrangements protecting both the property owners and club members preclude use of the RVM facilities by all others except in the case of invited qualified pilots at an organized event.
The following minimum rules have been agreed upon by a majority vote of the club members and it is the specific responsibility of each member to adhere to these rules and to see that all others do so at all times. Infractions of any of these rules shall be handled in accordance with the procedures set
forth in the By-Laws. Guests of RVM who wish to fly must be current members of AMA or MAAC.
Field Rules
1. RVM Club members shall abide by these rules. A map of the field with the NO-FLY ZONES, transmitter impound, pit area, engine start,
and engine run-in areas clearly marked will be posted in the Tx impound along with a copy of the current Constitution and Field Rules.
2. Only those club members, who have qualified under the official flight qualification program as set forth by the Club Training Committee and Chief Flight Instructor/Safety Officer shall be permitted to fly solo at the club field. A list of current RVM Qualified Pilots names and their MAAC # is posted in the Transmitter impound. Pilots shall check the list to make sure that their name is there prior to flying. The treasurer will ensure that the list is kept updated.
3. The Club shall not engage in the operation of internal combustion turbine- or ducted-fan jet-style model airplanes at the RVM Lindsay
Road flying field.
4. All transmitters shall meet current MAAC standards for frequency and power output issues.
5. Each transmitter shall have displayed clearly the frequency band and channel number.
6. A frequency pin, showing the pilots name, shall be placed on the frequency board prior to switching on any transmitter.
7. Where two or more pilots wish to use the same frequency, pilots shall limit their use to 15 minutes.
8. The RVM field is unsuitable for large, fast aircraft. Therefore, the Club does not permit the operation of ducted fan or turbine
powered aircraft at the Lindsey Road flying site.
9. In the event of an accident immediately call 911 and then call either Geoff Strottman or Brian Reid. We will take action from there in notifying the field owner and MAAC. Make no statements to anyone regarding liability until the accident has been properly investigated. You are personally responsible to remit $250.00 to the Club. The Club will then remit the full $500.00 to MAAC.
10. Insurance: you must have your new/renewed MAAC and Club Membership to fly at our field after December 31, 2008. You must always have your MAAC card with you if you fly anywhere else, but will only be covered by MAAC if you have the permission of the owner of the property on which you are flying. Preferably this should be in writing. If you fly anywhere else, you have no insurance coverage whatsoever except your own personal insurance.
13. All visitors are the responsibility of the club member who has invited them to the field. The Club member shall ascertain that the guest, if planning to fly solo, where solo is defined as being in control of the plane without the use of a buddy box:
a. has a current MAAC membership, not just a MAAC number;
b. has acquainted the guest with the NO-FLY zones and ensures that the guest does not violate such zones;
c. operates their aircraft with due consideration of the rules of the club and the MAAC Safety code.
Flying Rules
Foreword: The permanent pit area is the Northwest angle formed by E/W and N/S runways. Spectators shall be restricted to the area designated. This area is located just behind the pits and is fenced off from the pit area. All cars shall be parked in the designated parking lot. Cars shall only proceed to the pit area for the express purpose of loading or unloading planes and gear. They shall then be promptly parked in the appropriate area. There shall be ABSOLUTELY NO FLYING whatsoever over the no-fly zones as shown on the map. As maybe seen from the map, these zones are to the immediate east of the E/W runway, over Lindsay Road and the horse farm, and behind the parking lot.
1. There is an established pit area as shown on the Field Plan. This area is for the preparation of models for flight, and the conduct of maintenance. No engine or motor shall be started or run in the pit area. Aircraft must be carried to engine starting areas.
2. Pilots shall use appropriate restraints when starting engines.
3. There shall be no taxiing in the pit area.
4. When any group of flyers is at the field, they shall establish the active runway in accordance with the appropriate wind direction. No other runway shall be used, as this would constitute an unacceptable hazard to other pilots and/or spectators.
5. Pilots shall remain within the pilot area while flying. The pilot shall remain at the approved distance from the flight line or at designated pilot stations while flying the aircraft.
6. A spotter should be used whenever possible to watch for incursions into the NO-FLY ZONES. The club will also erect highly visible markers to aid in avoiding over-flying these zones.
7. There shall be a maximum of 5 aircraft in the air at any time.
8. Pilots who are about to take off or land shall verbally notify the others present that they are doing so.
9. There will be occasional need for a pilot to move onto the runway for the purpose of picking up a plane on the field. Prior to moving onto the active runway, the pilot shall verbally inform all flyers with planes in the air of his/her intention to do so.
10. All test flights of new aircraft or those repaired after crashes shall be made by taking off to the South, West or the North. No test flights shall take off to the East.
11. When a new aircraft is being test flown, no other airplanes shall be in the air and no other engines shall be running.
12. Flying after dark is not permitted at any time.
13. Engine run-up and break-in shall be done in the area stablished for this activity as denoted in the Field Plan. No spectator shall be allowed into this area.
Spectators
1. All family members, spectators and cars shall remain out of the pit area and shall no encroach on the runway.
2. All vehicles shall be parked in the parking area. A car may proceed to the pit area for the express purpose of loading or unloading planes and equipment, and shall then return promptly to the parking area or exit the facility.
Field Etiquette
1. Check Transmitter (Tx) and Receiver (Rec) switches before you arrive at the field (at home preferably) to make sure they are switched off.
2. The gate at Lindsey Road is to be secured after entering or leaving the field when there are cattle at the field.
3. Please ensure that the electric fence is operating correctly prior to leaving the field when there are cattle at the field.
4. All refuse is to be removed from the field by the flyer. There is no provision for garbage disposal.
5. Make a habit of reviewing the above rules and safety issues at the beginning of each season. Watch for changes that may occur during the year. This is an active/living document and changes are bound to occur.
