Barry Forbes Float Pond Flying Rules
1. There are established areas shown on the Site Plan. Pilots and their visitors are expected to respect these areas.
The areas are as follows:
a. Zone 1 Parking Area: All cars are to be kept in the designated parking areas marked by green flags unless dropping off
or picking up aircraft/flight equipment.
b. Zone 2 Spectator Area: This area is reserved for spectators and is located with their safety in mind. Spectators are cautioned that they must always be aware of where aircraft are flying as accidents can happen. Any shelters are to be erected at the rear of this area so as to provide as clean a sight line as possible for others.
c . Zone 3 Pit Area: this area is reserved for pilots, their planes and any authorized assistants. There will be NO starting/running of engines in the pit area. Repairs may be done in the pit area. Again any shelters are to be erected towards the rear of the area. The Frequency board and transmitter impound will be located in the pit area so that the use of 72 mHz frequencies can be controlled by the pilots.
d. Zone 4 Staging Area: This area is for models fuelled and ready for flying. There is no starting/running of engines in
this area.
e. Zone 5 Starting Area: This area is where all engine running and adjustment is to carried out. Pilots shall use appropriate restraints or the new starting table when starting engines.
f. Zone 6 Launch Area: This area will allow launching by hand, from the shore or from the dock. Launching is to be performed by an assistant so that the pilot can safely walk to a pilot station before the plane is released for taxiing.
g. Pilot Stations: Four (4) pilot stations are provided adjacent to the launch area. Aircraft launching is to be performed by
the assistan/spotter so that the pilot can safely walk to a pilot station before the plane is released for taxiing.
2. When any group of flyers is at the site, they shall establish the active flight pattern in accordance with the appropriate wind direction. No other flight pattern shall be used, as this would constitute an unacceptable hazard to other pilots and/or
spectators.
3. No Fly Zones
a. When the wind is from the East or West, no takeoff or landing may take place within the no fly zone
and should be far enough to the south of the pilot stations that the flight path will not take the plane over the roadway into the flight area, or within 100 ft of the parking area. The no fly zone is demarcated with striped poles.
b. When the wind is from the South the same restrictions apply. With a Southwesterly wind a normal approach would be over the eastern marker with a landing headed to the Southwest.
c. When the wind is from the Southeast, the approach must be from the Northeast across the pond with a left turn into the wind for the landing.
d. With the wind from the North, all of the Zones indicated above in Paragraph 1 will be moved to the west side of the pond. At no time will pilots attempt a take off to the North when the Zones listed in Paragraph 1 are located on the North shore of the
Pond
4. Pilots shall remain within the pilot area while flying. The pilot shall remain at the approved distance from the flight line or
at designated pilot stations while flying the aircraft.
5. A spotter shall be used at all times to watch for incursions into the NO-FLY ZONES and for possible collision
courses. The club will also erect highly visible markers to aid in avoiding incursions into these zones.
6. There shall be a maximum of 4 aircraft in the air at any time.
7. Pilots who are about to take off or land shall verbally notify the others present that they are doing
so.
8. There will be occasional need for a pilot to use the retrieval boat for the purpose of picking up a plane on the water. Prior to
doing so the pilot shall obtain the services of the boat operator, don a life preserver and accompany the boat operator to retrieve his plane. He shall also verbally inform all flyers with planes in the air of their intention to do so.
9. All test flights of new aircraft or those repaired after crashes shall be made by taking off to the South or East. No test flights
shall take off to the West or North. This is to reduce the likelihood of an accident.
10. When a new aircraft is being test flown, no other airplanes shall be in the air and no other engines shall be
running.
11. Flying after dark is not permitted at any time.
12. Engine run-up and break-in shall be done in the area established for this activity as denoted in the Site Plan. No spectator
shall be allowed into this area.
Spectators
1. All family members and spectators and shall remain out of the pit area unless invited and accompanied by a participating pilot.
2. All vehicles shall be parked in the parking area. A car may proceed to the drop-off area for the express purpose of loading or unloading planes and equipment, and shall then return promptly to the parking area or exit the facility.
Site Etiquette
1. Check Transmitter (Tx) and Receiver (Rx) switches before you arrive at the field (at home preferably) to make sure they are switched off.
2. The gate at the entrance to the facility is to be closed after entering or leaving the site.
3. Please ensure that the boat, outhouse and gate are locked prior to leaving the site.
4. All refuse is to be removed from the field by the flyer. There is no provision for garbage disposal.
5. Make a habit of reviewing the above rules and safety issues at the beginning of each session. Watch for changes that may occur during the year. This is an active/living document and changes are bound to occur.
6. Note that when flying at a non-event time, the only boat available may be the canoe, which is very tippy and requires some knowledge of canoeing. This is only ONE of the reasons we insist that you always have a buddy with you while you fly.
7. While the Kemptville hospital is close at hand you are ½ mile in from the road and it will take a while to get there so be
sure to know where the first aid kit is and have it easily accessible. (Normally stored in the outhouse for safe keeping).
